JOYFUL NOISE
- THE STORY OF HANDEL'S MESSIAH
Slickrock Films is set to produce an epic story about composer Handel and his great oratorium Messiah. The feature film, directed by Sterling Van Wagenen and based on a screen play by Tim Slover is in development.
Ludwig van Beethoven saw Handel as the greatest and he is not the only person who has been awe-struck by the transcendent music of George Friedrich Händel. Across the centuries it has thrilled and inspired generation after generation. Händel’s timeless music knows neither national border nor creed: it has reached around the globe to touch the souls of millions, king and commoner alike.
But like so many great artists before and after him, Händel’s life was not without struggle. Royal patronage blew hot and cold. A fickle public alternately adored and poured scorn on both him and his music. And when he turned his pen to oratorios, an art form he virtually invented, a faction of influential clergy accused him of blasphemy. It was in this stormy climate, with his career hanging in the balance, that Handel’s greatest achievement was born: Messiah.
