ISLAMIC ART IN FOCUS

Two major documentary projects looking into the past and present of Islamic art are in production from LVL Slickrock Films, both coinciding with the 2008 opening of the new Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. The majestic building is emerging, literally, from Doha Bay and is a symbol of Qatar’s ambition to become the cultural center of the Middle East. It is one of a number of arts and cultural projects underway in the fast expanding Middle East State.

WINDOWS ON THE HOUSE OF ISLAM

Sterling Van Wagenen is directing a mini-series/special (2x1 hr) for television on Islamic Art. The films, hosted by Tunisian-born Sabiha al-Khemir,  will put in context some of the extraordinary objects in the collection at the new museum in Doha. The objects bear witness to a rich and varied cultural history, spanning three continents and thirteen centuries, from the 7th to the end of the 19th century.

LEARNING FROM THE LIGHT

Some will call it a new "wonder of the world", and no doubt the new Museum of Islamic Art in Doha will attract visitors from around the world, not only for its exhibition, but also for its amazing architecture.

Bo Landin is directing a documentary for world television on the building of the museum, a film which will also feature the world renowned  architect I.M. Pei who says: “It is the light of the desert that transforms the architecture into a play on light and shadow…if one could find the heart of Islamic architecture, might it not lie in the desert, severe and simple in its design, where sunlight brings forms to life?”
